1 Lesson Overview Add text To know what weapons were used to attack a castle in the middle ages. To evaluate how effective these weapons were. Level 3 – List some of the weapons that could be used to attack a castle. Level 4 – will be able to describe how two weapons would be used to attack part of a castle. Level 5 – will be able to explain a good and bad thing about the weapons Level 6- will be able to judge which weapon was the most useful, explaining how it overcame a castles defensive features. Level 7 – will be able to analyse how effective these weapons would be today in a war. Add text First task – students are either describing, explaining or judging the defensive feature s of the castle whilst looking at included different levels of vocabulary Second task – pupils are discussing different questions when using the card sort and then choosing what level they want to work at in their answer booklet. Homework – pupils are choosing one of three tasks depending on their level Focus on how students can improve their written and verbal answers by using VCOP to improve their historical terminology, general vocabulary, punctuation, connectives and openers. Students are discussing in groups and sharing ideas. They are to be considerate of others views. Students at the higher level will be considering how societies use of weapons has changed over time and whether attitudes have changed. Possible opportunity to discuss the morality of the use of weapons if there is an opportune time within the lesson. I would presume during the opinion line task where I can question students about the ability of humans to kill during a battle.

2 You have one minute whilst I am doing the register to write down as many adjectives as possible about this castle. Can you now try and put some of these words into a sentence so that you can describe the castle. Using VCOP you now have one minute to improve your sentence by using a better sentence opener or connective.

Can you explain how well the castle could have defended itself using three words from the middle row of the vocabulary triangle? 3. Can you judge how well this castle would have defended itself using three words from the bottom row of the vocabulary triangle using a dictionary to help you find definitions of any words that you do not know? EXT: Can you use a thesaurus to find synonyms of some of the words that you have used?

Best weapon Don’t just identify which one is the best weapon, explain why it is good, judge why it is better than the others or justify why it would or wouldn’t be a good weapon to use today in a battle. Level 5 – Create a guide on how to attack a castle guide saying how you would use different weapons to overcome the defensive features of the castle. Level 6 – Imagine you are a soldier going off to attack a castle. Write a diary entry describing the your plan of attack for the castle. When would you use the different weapons? Level 7 – Imagine you are a time-traveller from the Middle Ages who has landed in a modern-day war zone. Explain how your weapons fare against modern-day weapons. Anytime you something from your VCOP sheet underline it in your homework.
