Last week we “ROARED” with TREXicon!
T- Topic sentence → Must state EXACTLY what the paragraph is proving! Remember to include the author and title of the text! R- Reason → Give a SPECIFIC reason that supports your position (T)! Remember to start this sentence off with a transition E- Evidence → Give all of the story details/textual evidence to SHOW the reason/what you mean by your reason. FOCUS only on this reason! Start off putting the textual evidence in your own words BLEND a direct quote from the text that backs-up your idea Put a properly formatted internal citation at the end of the sentence (Perrault 1). X-Explanation → Explain in your own words HOW the evidence proves your position-T! Remember not to start with THIS SHOWS, PROVES or DEMONSTRATES! icon-Sum-up → Close paragraph by restating your position, but not REPEATING it! Remember to start this sentence off with a STRONG transition Plus no first person (I, me, my, our, we, mine) or second person (you, your)

Some general feedback T’s = great job! author & title!
R’s = nice! Make sure you start with a transition! First of all, To begin, For starters, In fact,
5
Some general feedback E = good, but needs work!
Evidence CANNOT be just the quote alone! If the R = To begin, Red’s mom never told her to stay away from strangers. E = In the story it says, “The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf” (Perrault 1). After Red’s mom told her to bring the goodies to her grandma’s, she left and met a wolf along the way. The wolf asked her where she was going, and not only did she tell him, but she gave him exact directions. Sadly, Red did not realize she was doing the wrong thing because she was never told that “ it was dangerous to stay and talk to a wolf” (Perrault 1).

Some general feedback X = Impressive but will be stronger
No THIS SHOWS, THIS PROVES, R/E = To begin, Red’s mom never told her to stay away from strangers. X = This shows that it was not her fault. X = Even though most people feel Red should have known not to talk to a stranger, she was clearly still young and did not know right from wrong. It is a mother’s responsibility to protect her child and teach her such things. By not thinking to tell Red about stranger danger, her mother was irresponsible and definitely to blame for her child’s death.

Some general feedback icon’s = great job! Don’t REPEAT!
Make sure you start with a transition! To sum up, To reiterate, Therefore,

Writing with T-REXicon
Character Trait Example with quote and internal citation Explanation - how does this show the trait Woman determined Example - Sees John’s interest in piano Quote - “If you like, I could teach you while you’re here. I used to give lessons” (Lowry 47). -not giving up on John even though he is not being talkative -trying to break through to him and get to know him by learning about his interests Character Trait Specific Reason Textual Evidence with internal citation Woman determined Even though John wasn’t opening up to her, she would did not give up on him. “If you like, I could teach you while you’re here. I used to give lessons” Lowry 47). T- After reading an excerpt from Lois Lowry’s Gossamer, the best word to describe the woman is most definitely determined. R - To begin, when a young foster child moved in with her, he gives her a really hard time, but she does not give up on him. E – Specifically, from the moment he first walks in her house, he does not talk to her. When she asks him questions to try and get him to open up, he continually ignores her or gives her one word responses. She could have just stopped trying, but instead, when she notices that he shows an interest in her piano, she jumps on the opportunity to connect with him. She says, “If you like, I could teach you while you’re here. I used to give lessons” (Lowry 47). X - By noticing John's actions and showing an interest in spending time with him, the woman shows she is not going to be like the other people in his life. She will not stop trying to break through his "expressionless" exterior to find out what he's really like. Icon- Therefore, the woman proves she is committed to being someone John can count on.
