1 WELCOME 3rd Grade PARENTS !
Mrs.Sherry’s Class

2 ALL ABOUT ME! My name is Kelly Sherry.
I graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and from George Mason University with a Master's Degree of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, specializing in Literacy. I have been teaching for 19 years. This is my fourth year teaching at Potowmack Elementary. Originally from Florida and relocated to Virginia 18 years ago.

3 MY GOALS FOR THIS YEAR To provide a learning environment that values, challenges, and prepares students. To help students make new friends, discover new interests, and have fun. To engage students in instruction that will help them gain academic and social skills they need to progress to fourth grade and in life…5 C’s: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, cooperation, and communication. To create a love for learning in all students in order to foster life long learning habits.

4 3RD GRADE CURRICULUM Objectives/Standards to be posted on the website (3rd grade page)-Large focus on Language Arts/Reading and Math, as well as, Science and Social Studies. Literacy framework for 3rd Grade: Pathways to Reading and Writing: Building a Reading Life Project Based Learning – Resolving real-world challenges through exploration using student choice and voice, which help students become critical thinkers, communicators, and contributors. Lessons from The Leader In Me and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which will foster critical character traits in students and help them reach and achieve their highest potential. Personalized Learning-enhancing the learning experiences of all students in math. (See letter)

5 SCHEDULE (Detailed schedule with academic instruction on website.)
Art: Friday P.E.: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday Music: Tuesday & Thursday Library: Wednesday Computer Lab: Monday Search: Wednesday (A week) Guidance: Wednesday (B Week) Lunch: 11:30pm The students may bring a healthy snack that is not messy and a water bottle for class each day. We will have snack around 9:15am. WE ARE ALLERGY AWARE!

6 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS & INCENTIVES
We are a PBIS school, which means our children are learning to SOAR throughout the school with respect, responsibility, and effort. During the first week of school, the students and I will work together to review rules and incentives for the class. Please ask them about them. Our class will use the following incentives: Whole Class: Pom Pom Jar (whole group reward) Cooperative Groups: Popsicle Sticks Individual: Eagles to earn eagle incentive tickets (individual rewards) Weekly drawing with purple tickets

7 HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned daily.
Please refer to the planner for daily assignments and initial nightly after your child has completed homework assignment. Student of Week Schedule to be sent out early September, which will be completed for homework. Students will receive poster one week prior to being due. Students will have the opportunity to earn a “homework pass” after each quarter to be used when he/she chooses (with my approval). Homework will focus on reading, math, and word study. Reading logs will not be used. Reading activities will be used in class that reinforces reading at home and checks on completion of their reading. Please make sure they are reading nightly. 9 IMPORTANT REMINDERS The school day is 7:50am - 2:35pm. Students may arrive in the classroom at 7:30am. SOL testing in May-Please make every effort to ensure your child is in school during this time. Dates will be announced later in the year. Birthday: No food/treats-Loudoun County Policy Absences/Tardies: Do not forget call in, notes, s, etc. If tardy, must check in at office prior to coming to class. Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather and bring appropriate outerwear.
