1 OSSLT Prep: The Opinion Piece

2 What is an Opinion Piece?
One part of the OSSLT requires students to compose an opinion piece. An opinion piece is usually written in response to a question on a topic where opinions could vary. It allows one to express his or her point of view on the topic addressed in the question. An opinion piece is typically comprised of 5 paragraphs: an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

3 Keys to Success An effective opinion piece takes one side of a debate – not both. The introduction paragraph explains your answer to the question.  In your introduction, pick ONE side and identify three reasons why your answer to the question is correct. Each of the three body paragraphs explains one of your reasons why your answer to the question is correct. The fifth (final) paragraph concludes your essay by restating your opinion and summarizing why your answer is correct. The response is written in the first person with a voice that is formal, decisive, and strong.

4 Your Task: Examine the painting by Daniel Chiriac on the right.
In your opinion, is Daniel Chiriac's painting a good representation of Surrealism? Write an opinion piece in response to this question. Refer to your notes on Surrealism to help you develop an opinion and three reasons to support this point of view.
