Weather map symbols were created as a method of reporting meteorological data in mass quantities to weather analyzing agencies such as the National Weather Service.
The key to understanding a weather map is to understand the weather symbols that are used on the map.
The symbols are a form of shorthand used when writing out the information longhand becomes difficult.
Shorthand symbols are also used to represent weather data.
Let’s identify some weather symbols that meteorologist use to report weather data!

3. Look at the map below and identify some of the symbols you see.
After students try to identify what they think the symbols represent, you can allow them to use the Common Weather Symbols and their Meaning chart on the inside back cover of the book. You will have to explain wind direction around pressure centers (if not discussed when teaching air pressure), isobars, and wind barbs. Tell students they will use this map in today’s lab to predict weather conditions.
