Concept: Deviant vs. Mainstream Culture Essential Question(s) to answer: How does society treat those people that don’t “fit in” to their society? What is the impact of this “marginalization” on the greater society? Introduction to Cult Film

Definitions to Know Deviant Mainstream
Describes actions or behaviors that violate what is considered “normal”- i.e. breaking the law, wearing certain clothes, sexuality, etc Generally, the common current of thought of the majority (most of the people) Deviant Mainstream

How does this play into film?
Definition of a Cult Film: A cult film is a movie that attracts a devoted group of followers or obsessive fans, despite having failed commercially (sales) on its initial release. The term also describes films that have remained popular over a long period of time amongst a small group of followers.

Aspects of Cult Film that are different from Mainstream Film
Themes generally revolve around not “fitting” in to society- being “marginalized” ( on the outside)

Topics are uncommon topics i.e. death, vampires, zombies, deviant sex, psychological disorders

Aesthetics (the way something looks)- some movies have been shot in a different way- i.e. digital handheld cam [Blair Witch], black and white, gritty (dirtier),

Story doesn’t follow usual format, i.e. hero Monomyth, no archetypal characters, or good doesn’t always triumph over evil Characters portrayed are darker and not shown in good light

Sometimes it’s just something we have never heard or seen before (i.e. Pan’s Labryinth)

We will watch a portion of the film Trainspotting-a very controversial film about heroin addiction in Scotland You will be identifying aspects of Cult Films described earlier

Take 3 mins to write your thoughts on paper before we chat and close session: How can a deviant (outside the box) film cause controversy (problems) and threaten the mainstream (everyone accepts)?
