1 Introduction to Engineering Design

2 PLTW – Project Lead the Way
Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs. Through world-class K-12 curriculum, high-quality teacher professional development, and outstanding partnerships, PLTW is helping students develop the skills needed to succeed in the global economy.

3 Abbreviations… PLTW – Project Lead the Way
IED – Introduction to Engineering Design (Eng1) EOC – End of Course Exam POE – Principles of Engineering (Eng2) EDD – Engineering Design and Development (Eng3)

4 High Expectations – Work hard, work together!
Develop teamwork and a portfolio Engineering develops problem solving skills that are useful in any field! More CEOs have an engineering degree than an MBA! CEOs Ideally – a three year program

5 PLTW Engineering Program
Schools offer a minimum of three courses by the end of the third year of implementation Introduction to Engineering Design Principles of Engineering, and Any specialization course or the capstone course Engineering Design and Development

6 Foundation Courses Introduction to Engineering Design
Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work. Principles of Engineering Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.

7 Capstone Course Engineering Design and Development
The knowledge and skills students acquire throughout PLTW Engineering come together in Engineering Design and Development as they identify an issue and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their solution to a panel of engineers. Students apply the professional skills they have developed to document a design process to standards, completing Engineering Design and Development ready to take on any post-secondary program or career

11 IED – Introduction to Engineering Design

12 What is Engineering. How is it different from Science
What is Engineering? How is it different from Science? How is it Similar?

13 What is Engineering? The application of science and mathematics by which the properties of matter and the sources of energy in nature are made useful to people

14 Science and Engineering
Similar Practices: Develop and use models Plan and carry out investigations Analyze and interpret data Use mathematical and computational thinking Obtain, evaluate and communicate information Engage in arguments from evidence From the December 2014 NSTA “The Science Teacher”

15 Science and Engineering
Differences: Use practices to achieve different outcomes Generally, scientists work to understand and explain natural phenomena…Universal Generally, engineers try to design a solution to a problem or develop a product….More Specific From the December 2014 NSTA “The Science Teacher”

16 Engineering Achievements
