1 Do First Actions: Get yesterday’s worksheet stamped
Determine the i of the below formulas: NaOH C2H4 Mg 3(PO4)2

2 Naming Acids (and Bases)

3 Naming Bases Naming bases is no different than naming ordinary compounds For example: NaOH = Sodium hydroxide Mg(OH)2 = Magnesium hydroxide

4 Naming Binary Acids Binary acids contain two different elements: hydrogen and an electronegative element (usually from group 16 or 17). Name begins with prefix hydro- Root of second element Ends with –ic

5 NAME OF ANION OR POLYATOMIC ION
Naming Binary Acids FORMULA NAME OF ANION OR POLYATOMIC ION NAME OF ACID HF Flouride Hydroflouric Acid HBr Bromide Hydrobromic Acid H2S Sulfide Hydrosulfuric Acid HCl Chloride Hydrochloric Acid

6 Naming Ternary Acids (aka oxyacids)
An acid that is composed of hydrogen, oxygen and a third element (usually a non-metal) Usually written as one or more hydrogens with a polyatomic ion No hydro- at the beginning. If the polyatomic ion ends in –ite, change it to –ous. If the polyatomic ion ends in –ate, change it to –ic.

7 Naming Ternary Acids (aka oxyacids)
FORMULA NAME OF ANION OR POLYATOMIC ION NAME OF ACID HClO2 Chlorite Chlorous Acid HClO3 Chlorate Chloric Acid H2SO3 Sulfite Sulfurous Acid H2SO4 Sulfate Sulfuric Acid HNO2 Nitrite Nitrous Acid HNO3 Nitrate Nitric Acid H2CO3 Carbonate Carbonic Acid H3PO3 Phosphite Phosphorous Acid H3PO4 Phosphate Phosphoric Acid

8 Monoprotic vs. diprotic vs. triprotic acids
This refers to the number of protons (or hydrogen ions) of the acid 1 proton = monoprotic 2 protons = diprotic 3 protons = triprotic

9 Practice

10 DYL What element easily identifies an acid?
