3 Georgia’s five regions
As a state, we have a diverse geography. Think about it… How long does it take you to get to the closest Ocean? How about the closest mountain? Closest swamp? Atlantic Ocean (From CMS to Tybee Island= 4hrs, 23 mins) Stone Mountain (From CMS to Stone Mountain = 22 mins) Okefenokee Swamp State Park (From CMS to State Park Entrance=About 4hrs, 42 mins)

4 Blue Ridge Region Location: Northeastern GA Info:
-Home to GA’s largest mountains. -Primary industry of the area is tourism. -This region receives the most precipitation in the state w/ over 80 inches of rain per year! Fun Fact(s): Beginning point of the Appalachian Trail (ends in Maine), site of America’s first “Gold Rush” (Dahlonega), and is the starting point of most of GA’s rivers. Largest city in the Blue Ridge is Dahlonega.

5 Ridge and Valley Region
Location: Northwest of Piedmont Info: -Narrow ridges and low open valleys -Major industry is textiles/carpets (City of Dalton is nicknamed “Carpet Capital of the World”). Fun Fact: Major battleground area of the Civil War because it was on a transportation route from GA to Tennessee.

6 Appalachian Plateau Location: Northwestern corner of Georgia Info:
-GA’s smallest region -Coal mining is a major industry. Fun Fact: Nicknamed the “TAG” corner. Why? The states of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee all meet in this corner! 

7 Piedmont Region Location: Middle of the state Info:
-Most populous region (home to Atlanta, Athens, Augusta & Macon) -Manufacturing & poultry agriculture are the main industries Fun Fact: Nearly ½ of Georgia’s population lives in this region!

8 Coastal Plain Region Location: Southern Georgia Info:
-Makes up 3/5 of the state -Divided into two areas: inner (agricultural) and outer (coastal: tourism, shipping & seafood) Fun Facts: Naval WHAT? Pitch, tar & resin taken from pine trees to use in ship building! 1. The Coastal Plains region grows peaches, peanuts, cotton, and Vidalia Onions. 2. Home to Georgia’s oldest city: SAVANNAH! 3. In the past, pine trees were a huge resource in the Coastal Plains for paper & pulp production, as well as naval stores.
