2 What was the Cold War Not a “real” war
No one actually fought in this war Stand off of who is bigger and BADDER (Political Rivalry) USA VS. Soviet Union Democracy VS. Communism (Totalitarian gov.) Started right after WW2 Lasted 54 years USA Government – Democracy-Free nation Leader- Truman Soviet Union Government –Communist-very little choices Leader-Joseph Stalin

3 The origins (Start) of the Cold War
Tensions began at the Yalta Conference When: Feb 1945, in the Soviet Union (Russia) Who attended: USA, Great Britain, Soviet Union, france Why: Plan for Germany after WW2 What happened: Divided Germany up into four military zones (temporarily) USA wants Germany to be rebuilt and become a democratic nation with USA help Soviet Union wanted to weaken/punish Germany Big nation (USA) vs. Big nation (Soviet Union)

5 Problem with communism and Soviet Union
Stalin was an evil totalitarian dictator USA worried he would be like Hitler The USA felt they needed to stop Stalin and not appease him like England had done to Germany They did not want a repeat of WW2

6 Domino Theory created If one nation were to fall to communism then the nations near by/neighbors would also fall to communism Domino theory created because people worried about spread of communism

7 USA forms plan to “contain” Communism
Truman Doctrine Marshall Plan President Truman outlined his plan for contain Communism Containment = Not to let communism spread past its present area Truman asked congress , in march 1947, for $400 million to contain communism Send troops/guns/support USA gave billions to European nations to recover from war Only for non-communist nations Kept western Europe from becoming communist MT5 LT2

Chile elects Marxist/communist leader Many Latin American nations followed

9 USA puts “containment” into action

10 Treaties/Alliances NATO Warsaw pact The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 USA and other European nations 51 nations started Why: security against the Soviet Union. The Warsaw Treaty Organization Soviet Union and others It was created in response to (NATO) As protection from the nations united in the NATO Alliance

11 Important events/things that happened during the cold War
NASA is created First object, man into space and on moon Space race ( which nation would get a man on the moon) Soviet Union and USA had enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth 10x over Arms race ( who could build the most/best weapons) Helicopters created Guided missiles Radar (GPS) “under God” was added to the pledge of allegiance Countless political leaders were assassinated during the cold war JFK, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, You don’t have to write these notes

12 Cold war ends Mikhail Gorbachev took over as the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985 He likes western/democratic ideas In 1989 Poland elects a non communist leader/government Gorbachev does nothing All other nations controlled by Soviet Union with communist dictators began revolting German people tare down Berlin wall separated Democratic Germany from communist Germany By 1991 soviet union is no more = just Russia
