MODERN GENOCIDES (A research task)
After hearing about the abominable acts of the Holocaust firsthand, many do not believe atrocities such as this could still exist in the more civilized and modernized world in which we live today. Someone might argue, “Something as bad as the Holocaust would never happen today!” However, they would be wrong. Through this research assignment you will learn about the perpetrators, survivors, and victims of a modern genocide. Those from which you may choose include the events from Cambodia, Iraq/Kurdish, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur. Sadly, through research, you can find several others that have occurred post WWII.

The steps for the assignment are as follows:
MODERN GENOCIDE The steps for the assignment are as follows: Take time to conduct thorough data base research. Read and understand the research; too often kids gloss over the material that they then try to write about and/or discuss. Be a good reader. You must get it! Provide a quick one sentence summary of the genocide, that details the “5 w’s” of reporting (who, what, when, where, and why): who committed the atrocities and against whom, where and when did it take place, what the event entailed, and why they targeted a group of people. Remember to be brief since it is a summary. And because a good researcher gives credit to his/her sources, include (at least) three sources that you consulted –not Wikipedia! Use Noodletools to help guide you. This will allow me to easily check for reliability, as well as to practice citation entries. Lastly, find one additional interesting fact/idea/concept/story that you found about the world intervening/aiding/resolving. BE PREPARED TO SHARE AND DISCUSS in class.

WHO: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party regime, notably Josef Mengele and Heinrich Himmler, targeted mainly European Jews in order to establish a superior Aryan race (Rhea and Rhea). WHEN: post WWI, the Nazi party was established and in 1933 Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany, establishing the first concentration camps; this lasted through 1945 when Germany surrendered in May (A Teacher’s Resource for Night). WHERE: Germany and its occupied territory (Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland –which set off WWII) (Rhea and Rhea). WHY: Jews were scapegoated in order to establish a nationalistic Nazi Germany and ultimately a superior Aryan race (Rhea and Rhea). WHAT: In addition to mobile killing units, the Nazis systematically murdered nearly one-third of the world’s Jews through concentration camps. Here they would brutalize, starve, and gas prisoners (A Teacher’s Resource for Night). ADDITONAL FACT: the total number of victims is approximated at 6 million Jews and nearly 5 million non-Jews (“The Holocaust”).
