Bella is Edwards’s girlfriend. It doesn’t matter that Bella is a human and Edward is a vampire. After Edward and Bella have a big fight and Bella believes that Edward will never turn her into a vampire, she loses interest in Edward and Edward loses interest in Bella. Then, Bella moves on to hanging out with Jacob (a werewolf) and Edward begins to really, really like Bella again.

Spain searched Texas for gold for years without any success. After a lot of failed attempts, Spanish lost interest in the region. Then the French began to explore Texas to set up French settlements there. What do you think Spain’s reaction was? How could it compare to the love triangle of Bella, Jacob and Edward?

England was beginning to establish its thirteen colonies along the East Coast. (Shade in the 13 colonies in Blue).

7 The French come to the New World
France claimed the St. Lawrence River and was exploring the Great Lakes and Ohio River Valley, including Missouri and the Mississippi River. (Shade OH, MO Red)

8 Lasalle In 1682 this French explorer canoed down the Mississippi River to its mouth at the Gulf of Mexico. He planted the French flag and claimed all of the basin drained by the Mississippi for France. He named this region Fort St. Louis for his king.

9 Lasalle He landed in Lousiana by accident and formed settlement named La Lousiane.

11 Effects of French Settlement
Spanish hear of French settlement and want to defeat the French. The Spanish now build missions in East Texas to convert the Indians and to reclaim the region from the French.

12 So What? Effects of Spanish Exploration – France lost claim to TX, trade established between Native Americans and Europeans in missions, missions represented permanent claim to Texas by the Spanish Spain becomes main European powerhouse in Central and South America, southern North America.
