Try adding in your head… 1.8 + 2.3 + 4.7 + 2.4
Like bridging whole numbers, decimals can also be bridged from one another. Try adding in your head…

= ? Think … (of the 2.3) = 3.8 then (of the 2.3) = 4.1 then (of the 4.7) = 8.1 then (of the 4.7) = 8.8 then (of the 2.4) = 10.8 And finally (of the 2.4) = 11.2

Confused ? Well, what you do is … add the whole number first,
then…. the decimal portions next.
