Effect of age on kidney size. Cortical volume appears to decrease throughout adulthood, but whether this is due to nephron loss or decreased nephron size is unclear. Because of an increase in medullary volume, which could be compensatory, total parenchymal volume remains unchanged. When the increase in medullary volume ceases after age 60, total volume decreases.
