Preparing an Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopic Instrument for Characterization of Plasma-Facing Materials Ismael Catovic October 4, 2013
2
Surface Science Group Koel Research Group specializes in surface science Research: Characterize surfaces Understand fundamental chemical interactions at a surface Heterogeneous Catalysis Photocatalysts for solar cells Plasma-facing components
3
PPPL primary goal: “developing the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.”
4
Auger spectroscopy Basic parts:
Electron gun Electron detector Analyzer Typically use electrons in 50 eV to 3 keV range Works via core-valence-valence transition Surface sensitive (escape depth of electrons is a few nanometers). Used for detecting atoms on the surface of a material.
