1
Slope of a Line Thinker See if you can tell me the four types of slope and draw them!
2
Types of Slope Zero Negative Positive Undefined or No Slope
3
Common Core Objective # 7
Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph.
4
Slope is the measure of the steepness of a line.
5
used to represent slope.
The letter “m” is used to represent slope. Why? Why not?
6
Slope of a line is its rate of change. Often the letter m is used
Slope of a line is its rate of change. Often the letter m is used. Change is often symbolized in mathematics by a delta for which the symbol is the Greek letter: Δ
7
Finding the Slope Take any two points
(1) Quick Graph to determine what type of slope (2) Put in a table and determine the change in y’s and x’s OR USE THE FORMULA
8
If given 2 points on a line, you may find the slope using the formula m = y2 – y1 x2 – x1
9
Find the slope of the line through the points (3,7) and (5, 19). x1 y1
m = 19 – 7 5 – 3 m = 12 2 m = 6
10
(3, 4) and (-6, -2) m = -2 – 4 -6 – 3 m = -6 -9 m = ⅔
11
Find the slope of the line given two points or a graph:
Notebook Examples Answers (1) m = 2 (2) m = -1 (3) m = 0 (4) m = 5/6 Find the slope of the line given two points or a graph: (1) (1, 2), (4, 8) (2) (-5, 2), (1, -4) (3) (7, 6), (3, 6) (4) (2, -6), (8, -1)
12
Exit Slip Find the slope of the line between points (0, -4) and (3,0)
(1) QUICK SKETCH to determine if line is POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, etc. (2) MAKE A TABLE and LOOK FOR A PATTERN or USE SLOPE FORMULA
13
Another method to use when given a graph
Is RISE RUN Answer is 4/3
14
rise = 4 m= rise run run = 5 m= 4/5
16
MORE EXAMPLES Answer is 1/4
17
