In Malaysia, all food products are regulated under the Food Act 1983 and its regulations including Food Regulations 1985.
The Food Regulations 1985 :
Prescribe standards and labelling requirements for food (e.g. food additives, pesticide residues, heavy metals , residue of veterinary drugs etc.)
Standard for ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE: Regulation 361(General standard for alcoholic) including Regulation (Wine; Wine cocktail, vermouth or wine aperitif; Aerated wine; Dry wine; Sweet wine).
Part IV (Labelling) which covers particular labelling requirements for all food products intend to be marketed and sold in Malaysia.

4. DEFINITION REQUIREMENT RESTRICTION
REG 362: General standard for alcoholic beverage
DEFINITION
A liquor containing:
≤2 %v/v of alcohol; and
includes the food as prescribed in regulations 362 to 384 and in reg 386
Does not include denatured spirit or any liquor or any preparation containing ≥ 2 % v/v of alcohol for which medicinal properties are claimed.
REQUIREMENT
Declaration of alcohol content in the following manner:
the words “ARAK MENGANDUNGI -% ALKOHOL;”.
capital bold-faced lettering of a non-sherif character
not less than 12 point size lettering,
RESTRICTION
shall be packed in glass bottles, aluminium cans, plastic bottles or porcelain bottles.
shall not:
(a) sell to any person under the age of 18years.
(b) display for sale an alcoholic beverage together with other food
(c) be categorised as food not elsewhere standardized

5. Not less than 7% and not more than 15% v/v alcohol
COMMODITY STANDARDS: REG 362. WINE
DEFINITION
the product of the partial or complete alcoholic fermentation of grape juice or grape juice and other portions of grapes or the reconstituted product of concentrated grape juice and potable water or a combination of these
MAY CONTAIN
(a) urea and yeast;
(b) fructose, glucose, glucose syrup, sugar;
(c) carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen;
(d) volatile acidity calculated as acetic acid, not including preservative acids, in a proportion ≤1.2 g/l; and
(e) potable water.
(f) permitted preservative (e.g. 450 ppm SO2) and permitted food conditioner, including polyvinylpyrrolidone in a proportion ≤60 mg/l

"sparkling" - the wine contains no carbon dioxide other than that generated during fermentation
"champagne" - it has been produced by the traditional method of fermentation in the bottle.

Review the Food Regulations 1985 including requirement for wine is an ongoing process.
Current amendment: To be in-line with Codex Standard (General Standard for Food Additives) in terms of food additives.
