3 Napoleon in America 1800 – Napoleon Bonaparte
Convinces Spain to give Louisiana to France in exchange for helping Spain take control of part of Italy Jefferson worried b/c this gives France control of the lower Mississippi River Jefferson doesn’t want… Napoleon to try to take over any more land in America Have to have an alliance with Britain over France

4 Negotiations 1801 – Robert Livingston – ambassador to France
Jefferson order him to try to block the deal or gain concessions for the US 1803 – Napoleon b/g making plans to conquer Europe He doesn’t want an alliance b/w Britain and America if he resumes war w/ Britain France’s govt. short on funds

5 Make the Purchase! 1803 – Napoleon offers to sell all of the Louisiana Territory and New Orleans to the US Livingston immediately accepts April 30, 1803 the US buys the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million (about 2 cents per acre) The Senate overwhelmingly ratifies the deal

6 Great Deal! The Louisiana Purchase Doubled the size of America
US territory now stretched from… The Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains From the Gulf of Mexico to Canada Often called the greatest land deal ever made

Jefferson hired: Meriwether Lewis-army officer & note taker William Clark-mapmaker & outdoorsman York-Clark’s slave Sacagawea-Native guide & interpreter Purpose: to explore the Louisiana Purchase & do the following: Find a trade route to the west Make detailed reports on geography, plants, animals, customs & languages of the natives
