Simple Sentence: ? Has a subject and what it did I=subject
Skinny side: Sentence Structure A sentence with one clause. ? Clause=idea Example: I read the book. Has a subject and what it did I=subject read= what the subject did

Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own.
Compound Sentence: a sentence containing two or more clauses that can stand independently. Example: He wants to go and I want to stay. Two related ideas—each one could stand on their own.

Skinny side Complex Sentence A sentence containing one or more subordinate clauses. REMINDER: Sentence= complete thought—subject and verb. Subordinate= cannot stand alone (dependent) Example: Although my friend invited me to a party, I do not want to go. Although my friend invited me to a party (what?) I do not want to go. (where?) When they joined together=complex sentence

Compound/Complex Sentence
A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Tip: You know it is dependent because it cannot stand alone—it needs the others. Example: We decided that the movie was too violent, but our children, who like to watch scary movies, thought we were wrong.

PROJECT MINI LESSON To whom is the magazine/newspaper being marketed? Consider audience If I’m reading a magazine for “top gods”, maybe my approach is sympathetic to a god who smites those who don’t listen. If I’m a “Ladies magazine” what type of story is interesting to my audience?
