Figure 1 Model for Swi6-Mediated Recruitment of Epe1 and Its Consequences on Heterochromatin Stability, RNA Pol II Occupancy, and Transcription at a Heterochromatic Locus Epe1 is recruited to heterochromatin due to its interaction with Swi6. A possible competition for binding to Swi6 between Epe1 and Clr3 (highlighted by the question mark) could destabilize heterochromatin. In this case, more Epe1 binds locally to Swi6 proteins, provoking an increase in RNA Pol II occupancy and transcription (dashed arrow) in heterochromatin. Conversely, if more Clr3 binds to Swi6, heterochromatin would become less permissive to RNA Pol II and transcription. The oval gray circles depict nucleosomes, and the small red circles represent histone H3 lysine 9 methylation. Molecular Cell , DOI: ( /j.molcel ) Copyright © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
