1
Pre –Lab Gas Pressure What factors affect the pressure exerted by a gas? In this lab investigation, we will be studying various factors that relate to gas pressure and gas behavior. Start a new page in your lab notebook for the Gas Pressure Lab
2
Brainstorm Brainstorm all ideas for ways to alter the pressure of a gas in a sealed syringe (such as the one provided with Vernier’s gas pressure sensor) An example of a sealed syringe is pictured below. The syringe is “sealed” since it is screwed on to the pressure sensor. The sensor detects the force of gases
3
Share with the class… Your list represents independent variables
Write your ideas on the large front board, but do not repeat ideas already given We will narrow the list of variables to those that can be easily manipulated with lab equipment available and in the time available
4
Group Design Work only on the IV assigned to your group
Research Question Hypothesis Statement IV, DV Controlled variables This Pre-Lab will be checked next class period (due 9/4, 9/5)
5
Experimental Background
Causal Question List IV, DV, Constants (controlled variables) Hypothesis Statement
6
Apparatus List ALL materials / equipment in columns
Diagram of setup with labels
7
Data Collection Data Table with all quantitative data
Units & uncertainty in column headings Significant figures appropriate to uncertainty Descriptive title Qualitative data under the data table
8
Data Processing Graph of P vs V OR P vs n (You only need ONE graph)
Axes labeled with variables and units Clear data points Trend line or curve Descriptive title Equation of the line or curve, with appropriate variables and units, under the graph
9
Conclusion State the relationship between variables (verbal description from board meeting) Justify relationship by referring to the graph Explain the significance / meaning of the graph constant, relating this to the variables tested Use scientific language appropriately
10
Evaluation Identify sources of weakness in the method, materials, quality of data Evaluate sources of weakness for their specific effect on the results Suggest realistic improvements for the weaknesses identified; improvements that will have an effect on the results
11
Format Black ink (type) only
Order of sections is correct; do not attach the graph to the end of the report Section headings PAST TENSE throughout the report NO PRONOUNS anywhere in the report
