“Father of the Nation” Thinking Development When Gandhi was 19 years old, he went to London to study law. While Gandhi was in London, he read and studied about different religions. Once Gandhi was finished with his schooling, he returned to India to be a lawyer. Gandhi was not able to find a job that pertained to law in India, so he decided to move from India to South Africa. 1. “Father of the Nation” Thinking Development His first experience of racism and discrimination was on a train to South Africa. He was told to move to a third class booth, even though he had a first class ticket. While in South Africa, he faced many more hardships such as being kicked out of a restaurant. Gandhi returned to India in He wanted to protest the same way against the British Government. One of his strategies for nonviolent protesting was boycotting anything from the British Empire. 1.
