Henri Coandă was a Romanian inventor and the builder of an experimental aircraft, the Coandă – 1910, which was described as the world’s first jet.

The miracle of wind
As a child, Henri Coandă was fascinated by the miracle of wind. His father, who was a Romanian general in the army, wanted a military career for young Henri.

He studied at Military and Naval Engineering School in Bucharest. In 1904 he was sent as a sergeant in Germany and he  continued his studies at the Technical University of Berlin and at the Montefiore Institute of Liege, Belgium.

In 1908 he obtained the permission to leave the army, because he realized that the military discipline wasn’t good for him. In 1909, he enrolled in the new founded École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs en Construction Aéronautique, Paris. One year later, he graduated the first of his class of aeronautical engineers.

In 1910, he designed and built an aircraft known as the Coandă The aircraft used a 4-cylinder piston engine to power a rotary compressor which was intended to propel the craft by a combination of suction at the front and airflow out the rear instead of using a propeller.

In 1926, he developed a device to detect liquids under ground, useful in petroleum prospecting. 
He invented a new decorative material used in construction, beton-bois; one example of its use is the Palace of Culture, in Iași.

The most famous of Coandă's discoveries is the Coandă Effect, which has been used in many aeronautical inventions.
He invented a modular system of sea water desalination and transformation to fresh water, based on solar energy, which is a clean, ecological and adaptable system, used in our days.
