2. What is poverty?
Poverty is a word used to describe people in society who cannot afford the essentials that are needed for a basic standard of living. Some people in Ireland and in most parts of the world live in poverty.

3. The world: rich north and poor south
A basic way of understanding the global poverty/development divide was devised by Willy Brandt, in 1980, as shown in this map.

5. Poverty today in Ireland – a case study
Over 1,000 homeless families, that’s over 2,500 children, live in hotels and bed and breakfasts!
Karen’s story
Karen lives in a hotel room with her two sons, aged six and 10.
There are two beds (one single and one double). There is a small fridge in the corner and a kettle and a toaster on the floor beside it.
There is nowhere to cook dinner and only a petrol station and a takeaway within walking distance.
Breakfast in the hotel is too much hassle with too many questions from other guests, such as ‘Why do you live here?’
Living in a hotel is not all it is cracked up to be when you are not on holidays!

6. The poverty cycle
People who are poor often get caught in a poverty trap or poverty cycle, which can be very difficult to escape.
