Full moon
The Earth, moon, and sun are approximately aligned.

4. The moon is appx. ¾ still full.
Waning Gibbous moon
The moon is appx. ¾ still full.

5. The moon is at a 90 degree angle with the Earth and sun.
Third quarter moon
The moon is at a 90 degree angle with the Earth and sun.

6. Waning Crescent moon
The moon is appx. 1/4 still lit. The illuminated portion is decreasing.

7. When it is waning, the sunlit fraction is getting smaller.
Waxing and Waning
When the moon is waxing, it means the sunlit fraction is getting larger.
When it is waning, the sunlit fraction is getting smaller.
