5 WHAT IS MOBILE LEARNING? Mobile learning is a subset of e-learning, which itself is a subset of education, and has a distinct focus on learning through the use of devices that can be easily carried.

6 Why do I want to use mobile learning as a teacher of English?

7 Possible reasons: You like technology You want to try out something new with your learners You have seen your learners all have smart phones or iPods\iTouches already Why not get them using these for learning? A few of your learners have asked you to recommend apps,games and other mobilefriendly content they can use out of class Youve read\heard about the benefits of informal learning

8 WHAT IS MOBILE LEARNING IN REAL-LIFE? Here are some examples: Fourth grade students in Oregon use an iPod to record drafts of their papers, catching errors that just dont sound right they may otherwise have missed. In 2004, Duke University began giving iPods to freshmen, which were used for everything from reviewing pre-loaded orientation information to field recordings of notes, sounds, and audio data.

9 WHAT MOBILE DEVICES ARE USED FOR MOBILE LEARNING? SMARTPHONES AND PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS (PDAS). MORE SPECIFICALLY, MANY POPULAR MOBILE DEVICES INCLUDE: IPOD TOUCH IPAD IPHONE ANDROID-POWERED SMARTPHONES ANDROID-POWERED TABLETS CAMERAS, GPS (GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM) DEVICES, ETC.

10 TYPES OF MOBILE LEARNING Individual Mobile Learning Peer-to-Peer or Peer-to-Instructor Mobile Learning Group Sharing Mobile Learning

11 INDIVIDUAL MOBILE LEARNING Original course work: usually in some combination of text, audio, and visual components. May include reading e- books or listening to audiobooks, listening to lectures, watching demonstrations, reviewing assignments. Skill practice: writing drafts of papers, recording oral practicing of everything from vocabulary practices to speeches. Research: using Internet access to find source content. Content capture: taking notes, recording audio/visual content.

12 PEER-TO-PEER OR PEER-TO- INSTRUCTOR MOBILE LEARNING Posting questions or work products on shared websites, sending files to peers or instructors. Sending emails, texts to peers or instructors to get fast answers to questions, checking on assignments, setting up meetings.

13 GROUP SHARING MOBILE LEARNING Using social networking sites/shared websites to collaborate with others anywhere in the world.

15 HOW TO APPLY MOBILE LEARNING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSROOM Get your ss to use a mobile dictionary to define key words. Get your ss to use a mobile encyclopedia to tell a brief account a topic. Get your ss to use a mobile camera to make a photo narrative (group work) Get your ss to use a mobile to make a documentary (group work) Get your ss to use a mobile to make a short movie; drama or instructional (group work)

16 CONCLUSION Mobile learning is becoming very active part of the teaching process English teachers have a justified ground to use mobile learning Mobile learning can be easily practised as an individual, pair and group work in English language classroom
