Reading February 2019
2
Welcome We will talk about Aspects of reading important in KS2
How to support effectively at home What should your child be reading? Any questions
3
What makes a child a great KS2 reader?
4
Broadly FS is where you learn to read - find out how sounds make words that have meaning
KS1 builds on that to improve confidence, speed and understanding of what they are reading. In KS2 things are a little different. Now it is all about how the children understand and interpret what they are reading. To do this they must : Read fluently Develop excellent comprehension skills Understand and use increasingly complex vocabulary Have exposure to a breadth of quality reading material
5
What is fluency? Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words automatically. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from what they read. Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression. Their reading sounds natural, as if they are speaking. Readers who have not yet developed fluency read slowly, word by word. Their oral reading is choppy. Because fluent readers do not have to concentrate on decoding the words, they can focus their attention on what the text means.
6
How to improve fluency? read the right complexity of text (book lists to take away at the end) Re read the same piece over and over Be heard reading and be read to Discuss new or difficult words with children.
7
Bug Club
8
How to support at home Use Bug Club
Encourage children to read their school reading book as a minimum 3 times a week. Exposure to different types of reading material - instructions, newspapers, magazines, internet etc. Continue to read to your child. Something a little difficult for them to stretch understanding. If you can ‘act with your voice’. Question your child on their understanding. Children find some questions, particularly inference and author’s choice questions very difficult. Stem questions and sentences for this will be stuck in planners this week and will be on bookmarks – coming soon! Eg. Why did the author choose the word…………? I would like to ask the character…………..
9
Home Learning Expectations
To read a minimum of 3 times a week This should be the school reading book or Bug Club Child to enter when read in planner and write a few sentences about what they have read (not just page numbers)
10
What should your child be reading?
Lists of age appropriate books for you to take away Websites where you can find lists of books your child might like Reading for pleasure but also a breadth ( eg not just David Walliams) Reading Scheme – Scheme will finish when on highest level comprehension and fluency good enough. Children will still receive a book from school, as a school reader. Any questions?
