2. Characters as Symbols Handout
At the top and center of the back side, please write “Jack as Savage”
Directions: Find passages in the text that make it clear that Golding intends for us to see Jack as a symbol of savagery.
Look for similes, personification, metaphors, and diction (word choice) that describe or develop Jack’s savagery.
Remember! Jack symbolizes humans’ instinct to:
gratify immediate desires,
act violently to obtain supremacy over others,
and enforce one’s will.
