The Reagan Revolution

outline The hostages in Iran were released after 444 days on Reagan's inauguration day. Reagan was 69 years old and wanted to focus solely on fiscal fitness and a leaner federal government. He wanted to dismantle the welfare state and reverse the evolution the government had gone through over the years past Reagan famously said “Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem” Reagan created a federal government that was similar to a baby in the fact that it was all appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility to at the other. Since 1960, federal spending had risen from 18% of the gross national product to around 23%. The federal budget also shifted from being defense to entitlement programs like social security and Medicare. In 1973, the departments of Health, Education, and Welfare passed the Department of Defense.

outline In 1978, there were tax revolts in California that cut property tax and forced a lot of painful cuts to government services. Reagan proposed a new federal budget that had $35 billion cuts. Most of the above cuts came from programs like food stamps and federally funded job-training centers. He had a majority republican in the Senate but he still wanted to get his way in the democratic house, so he went about some politicking. He chose democrats who would abandon their beliefs and follow whatever the president was saying and support him. On march 6th, 1981, a gunman shot Reagan when he was leaving a hotel in Washington. Reagan recovered and returned to work not 12 days later.

Source 1 Origin - the picture is from Washington DC at the time of Reagan's inauguration Content - the image shows Reagan being sworn in to presidency Purpose - the purpose is to document this time in history Value - this has value to my research because it shows something that I talked about on slide 1 Limitations - this has limitations because you can't tell from the picture who else is in the picture and you would have to further research that

Source 2 Origin - this picture was made in America sometime around 1978 during the tax revolts Content - it is a political cartoon that depicts california essentially begging other states for food Purpose - this was to shed light on the struggle that california was going through at the time Value - this is adds value to my research because it shows the pressure Reagan was under Limitations - we don’t know who created this and when they actually created it. We can only assume

Source 3 Origin - this picture is from America at some point during Reagan's time in office Content - the image depicts Reagan's official president picture with the flags in the background. Purpose - the purpose was to preserve history and also have a picture of who the president was at the time Value - this has value because it shows how old he really was lol Limitations - a limitation is that we dont know what year this was actually from.

Compare/Contrast Both source 1 and source 3 depict Reagan during his presidency and are actual pictures of him. Source 1 suggests that people were excited for Reagan to be in office and everyone was happy; however source 2 says that obviously states and whole groups of people were struggling financially and physically with his presidency

2 Essential Questions Why did Reagan want to change the government to be more fiscally fit? How did Reagan contribute to the change in federal spending over the years?
