1
Challenges to Identity
2
Globalization can bring us closer together.
There are more similarities in values, languages, and culture However, this “sameness” can mean that unique identities face challenges. Homogenization – the process of cultures becoming more alike
3
Assimilation – the process of a minority culture being absorbed into a dominant culture
If there is complete assimilation, the smaller culture disappears entirely.
6
Marginalization – pushing a group of people to the “margins” of society where they have little political, social or economic power THINK ABOUT THIS: What groups of people are marginalized in Canadian society? What about in Crossfield, or in W.G. Murdoch? Why does this occur?
7
Indigenous people around the world were marginalized by the European empires when they arrived in North & South America, Africa, and Australia While many indigenous groups survive today, they still must fight against marginalization.
8
Canada promotes multiculturalism, but the USA puts more pressure on immigrants and minorities to assimilate
9
Canada is described as a cultural mosaic
Like a collage of different identities
10
USA is described as a melting pot
Because other identities become “American”
