Bioaccumulation vs. Biomagnification
Most pollutants either cannot be broken down by natural processes, or take an extremely long time to be degraded. This causes pollutants to build up in our ecosystem! Bioaccumulation: toxins build up in the tissues of an organism at a faster rate than it can be excreted. Biomagnification: increase in the concentration of toxins as trophic levels increase.

5 40 1 7 4 Draw an ecological pyramid of numbers of different organisms using the information above. Now try to draw an ecological pyramid displaying the concentrations of toxins at each trophic level
4
Can biomagnification influence biodiversity?
5
Objectives Examine the concepts of bioaccumulation and biomagnification of a chemical in a food chian Create a model to demonstrate the concentration amount at each trophic level
6
Meet the players “M” = toxin amount Phytoplankton Osprey Zooplankton
