Origins of Art therapy Margaret Naumberg, an american art teacher, found the use of art therapy a powerful form of therapeutic communication for several children she taught. Naumberg observed that self- expression through spontaneous art became a psychotherapeutic treatment in its own right. Naumberg’s theory dealt primarily with the unconscious expression of nonverbal thoughts as an important tool. A second theory, developed by art teacher Edith Kramer, suggested that the process of drawing itself was therapeutic

Colors have meaning Black: Grieving, mourning, somber Brown/natural colors: Groundedness, down-to-earth White: Avoidance, cover up Red: Emotional peaks such as anger, pain, pleasure

Orange: Change, positive or negative
Yellow: Energy, energizing Blue: Happy, peaceful, calming Green: Happiness, joyful, calming, Life/living Violet/purple: Highly spiritual, love

Doodling - nonverbal messages that surface from the unconscious mind.

Aggression = Dark, heavy jagged lines
Happiness = soft curvy lines Inner Peace = horizontal lines

Men typically draw geometrical shapes
Women tend to sketch faces.
