Osteoclasts are responsible for the resorption of a localized packet of bone, and when they cease their activity, a team of osteoblasts is attracted to the resorption site, where they proliferate, differentiate, and then reform the packet of bone. (Inset) Ephrin-Eph forward signaling from osteoclasts to osteoblasts may be responsible for driving the formation of the new bone packet, and ephrin-Eph reverse signaling may be responsible for the cessation of continued bone resorption by osteoclasts.
