7
Vocabulary Systems of Equations – A collection of two or more equations with the same set of variables
8
In the Past… We have found a solution to one equation: Ex) y = x + 3
Now, we will be given more than one equation, and we have to find a solution that works for BOTH equations Ex) y = 5x y = 2x + 30
9
How can we do this… There are multiple ways to solve a system of equations. We will be learning two of those ways, and we are going to start with GRAPHING
10
Let’s Review How to Graph a Line
You need the slope and the y – intercept in order to graph a line: Step 1 – Plot the y – intercept Step 2 – Use the slope to plot 2 more points (Remember Rise over Run) Step 3 – Connect the points with a line
11
Practice Problems Graph the following equations: Y = 3X + 2
12
Example 1 Solve by Graphing
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Y = X Y = -3X + 4
13
Example 2 Solve by Graphing
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Y = X + 2 Y = -2X - 4
14
Example 3 Solve by Graphing
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Y = -X + 5 Y = 2X + 2
15
Example 4 Solve by Graphing
Solve the system of equations by graphing. Y = X + 1 X + Y = 7
16
Homework Section 8.10 # 1, 8 – 10, 13 Solve each system of equations by graphing. 1. Y = -x 8. Y = 2X 9. Y = X 10. Y = -X + 1 Y = X – 4 Y = X + 1 Y = -X + 4 Y = X – X + Y = -3 X – Y = -3
