What Is It? Google Docs is a Cloud-Based word processing program similar to MS Word. Cloud-Based means you do not have to worry about where to save the document. It is online. You can retrieve it and work on it from any device at any time. *
3
Let’s Try This! Step 1: Click on your Apps Launcher
Step 2: Go to Google Drive Step 3: Click on the red Create button Step 4: Choose Document Create a Google Doc with the participants so that you can model for them. (The Drive icon is linked to Google Drive.) *
4
Name Your Document *
5
Let’ Format! You can change:
Using the menu options and the toolbar at the top of the screen, you can format your text to make your document look more appealing. Fonts Font size Color Alignment Bold, underline, italics Bulleted Numbered Columns Add Images Add Links Add Shapes And much more... Have participants create a document and see how many of the options on the left they can find in the menus and on the toolbar. Model some of these features through your own projected Google Doc. Make sure to point out the Undo/Redo features. *
6
Google Docs has a few differences from regular word processing programs.
Let’s See...
7
Web Clipboard To begin, practice how to copy and paste with the participants. Type a word, highlight it, go to Edit > Copy. Click back in the document, then return to Edit > Paste. (Show participants how to copy and paste through the edit menu since we will need that for teaching about the Web Clipboard. Discuss with participants the limitations of copy and paste. You can only copy one thing at a time and you can only paste the last thing that you copied. Web Clipboard allows you to copy and store multiple things for up to 30 days. Since it is associated with your account, your can retrieve these items from any computer. Highlight what you want to copy. Click on Edit > Web Clipboard > Copy selection to web clipboard. Copy a few other items to the Web Clipboard to show participants how it catalogs saved items. Then return to Web Clipboard to show participants how to retrieve saved items and Clear all items. Allow participants time to practice using Web Clipboard. Discuss advantages of Web Clipboard over regular Copy and Paste. *
8
Sharing If you click on the image - it links you to a Favorites document. Invite the participants to collaborate on the document. Upon completion, review the sharing options. *
9
Show them revision history in the Favorites document
Show them revision history in the Favorites document. Discuss how it can be used to monitor student contributions to group work and such. Revision History *
10
Comments You can add comments to a document for collaborators to see when they login. Either highlight a word or set your cursor where you want the comment, click on the Comment button, then type in your comment. Review. How can this be used? *
11
At the top of the screen where you can view collaborators, to the left of the number of collaborators is a small arrow. Clicking on the arrow will open the chat window. Participants can use the chat feature within the document the same way they can chat in Gmail. Allow participants to try the chat feature within the Favorites document. Chat *

14

Tools - Research *
16
Summer Vacation United States Canada Mexico Europe Africa Asia
Australia Randomly assign your participants to groups and have them collaborate on the attached document. (You can even number them in the presentation to make it easier to assign.) Depending on the group - I have done similar activities where I made the rule that no one can talk. Therefore they HAVE to use the communication features.
17
Questions (5 minutes) Discuss with participants the features of Google Docs. Ask what tools they think will be most beneficial and why. Ask what tools they can use with students or that students can use on their own. *
