2-3 Solving Multi-Step Equations
Goal: Solve multi-step equations using the Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms Eligible Content: A / A / A
2
Vocabulary Multi-Step Equations – equations that require multiple steps to isolate the variable.
3
Sometimes you have to combine like terms before you get x alone!
7x – 3x – 8 = 24 4x – 8 = x = x = 8
4
Sometimes you have to distribute before you get x alone
4(2x + 7) = 64 4•2x + 4 • 7 = 64 8x + 28 = x = x = 4.5
5
Examples 2x – 9x + 17 = -4 x = 3 2y + 3y + 1 = 6 y = 1
6
Examples 8(3x – 4) = -8 x = 1 -6(2w – 8) = 72 w = -2
7
Examples 5y + 3(y + 4) = 28 4z – 3(z – 2) = 21 -2(4h +5) + 3 = 17
