Chapter Four Vocabulary

Algebraic Expression An expression is a combination of individual terms separated by plus or minus signs and includes a variable. It does not have an “equals” sign. Example:

Equivalent Expressions
Two expressions are equivalent if they have the same value. Example: 2 + 3 is equivalent to

Equivalent Ratios If two ratios have the same value when simplified, then they are called Equivalent Ratios. Example: 18:24 = 15:20 = 3:4 when simplified

Evaluate To find the numerical value of.  Substitute the value(s) given for the variable(s) and perform the operations according to the order of operations. Example: 2x + y − 10 when  x = 4 and y = 3

Reduce To put a fraction into simplest form. Example:

Enlarge To make bigger, expand.

Equivalent Fractions Two fractions are equivalent if they have the same numerical value. Example: 𝟑 𝟔 and 𝟓 𝟏𝟎

Expression A mathematical phrase that combines numbers (1,2…) and/or variables (y,z,x…) using operations (+ - x ÷). Example: 4 + (5 − 3)

Ratio Compares two quantities by division. Example:

Similar Figures When two figures have the same shape and the ratios of the lengths of their corresponding sides are equal. Example:

Substitution Replacing one symbol with a number, a variable, or another algebraic expression of the same value. Example: 13x − 6 when x = 4. 13 (4) - 6

Vertex (Plural:Vertices)
The point at which two line segments meet to form a "corner."

Variable A symbol used to represent one or more numbers. Example: 3x – (8xy + z) x, y, z = variables
