School Lunch Systems & Childhood Obesity
ENGL 1102 Mrs. Germain Juyoung Jeong I did my research on school lunch and how it affects the children related to their health. I will first briefly talk about what I researched about my topic.

Children in Schools Children are provided with high-fat, high-sodium, low-nutritious food during school. Students slowly inhabit the bad eating habits and slowly lead themselves into the obesity level. These school lunch system does not help maintain students’ health. Children are provided with such food that causes them to become obese and to gain the habit of unhealthy eating. The schools have slowly realized about the issues coming up upon their school lunch system and has been trying to prevent such bad results like childhood obesity by coming up with resolutions.

Resolutions schools have come up with
Schools have started to limit the soda and snack vending machines for students to use. Other schools have set up a new sub/salad bar in the lunch program to provide with more healthy food. Edible Schoolyard Program was started to provide students with healthy food and to teach them about how crops grow and to show how their dishes come out to be. Schools have come up with many different ways to prevent childhood obesity rate go up by their consumption of food in schools. Many schools have reduced or got rid of pizzas and french-fries in their lunch menu and started to put more healthy food like vegetables.

Interesting facts from research
The surplus beef and poultry that the USDA offers as free commodity items to our school systems are held to a lower standard than fast-food chains like McDonald’s. Kids who don’t buy lunch at school are healthier. Children who grow their own garden tend to eat more vegetables and fruits than the ones who don’t. I have focused on three interesting facts I have found during my research.

Video: School Lunch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bauJhztUQA
Michael Pollan talks about how school lunch systems are poorly set up and how it affects the children’s health. I wanted to share this video that I found to explain that the nasty, terrible things you hear about school lunch systems are not just rumors but facts. And how important it is for us to prevent this from happening in the future even more.

Survey on School Lunch I have asked about 50 of my friends about their school lunch and what kind of food they preferred. 16 of my friends liked the food schools provided. 34 of my friends didn’t like the school food and had taken their own lunch from home (because the food was gross to them or the lunch line was too long for such a short period of lunch break time). I asked many of my friends about their school lunch systems when they were in high school, middle school and found out the result of how they also didn’t enjoy eating school lunch.

Thank you! I enjoyed researching for such an interesting topic and learned new things about school lunch systems. I personally will take this in consideration in the future since my career is to become a teacher, and children’s health is very important especially when they are still growing.
