Political Machines By 1900, many cities were controlled by political machines In exchange for votes, machine “bosses” used their positions to offer jobs, support, and other benefits Not entirely bad… for some folks Boss Tweed, kingpin of New York’s “Tammany Hall” political machine.

What was life like in the 1900s?
Lots of immigrants packed into densely populated tenement houses in cities Terrible working conditions in factories: unsafe, low pay, and high risk of fire Unsafe products: meatpacking, unregulated chemicals added to food, and cocaine sold over the counter Environmental problems: excessive mining and drilling and poor air quality

Got his boat stolen on a trip in South Dakota. Built a new boat, chased down the thieves, beat them up, and dragged them to justice Youngest American president ever. And he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Came from a well-to-do family, but didn’t just sit around counting his inheritance Suffered from asthma as a child, but never let it stop him Served as Police Commissioner of New York City, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Commander of the Rough Riders, Governor of New York, Vice President, and finally President of the United States

Hmm… Teddy Roosevelt, for all his privileged upbringing, probably didn’t seem like the type to help make life better for the poor and downtrodden. And yet, Teddy was all about PROGRESSIVISM!!!

Teddy the Progressive Roosevelt was also concerned about the plight of “the little guy” Introduced the “Square Deal” Every American, not just the rich ones, could get in on a piece of the American dream Highly popular with most of America Rich people were kind of ticked Teddy went all Honey Badger on them

Conservation of natural resources Control of corporations Consumer protection This led to Teddy being known as a Progressive His ideas made him very popular Many other people were also progressives, however Including Upton Sinclair, Jacob Riis, Jane Addams, etc.

Many businesses were monopolies in America at this time Prices were high, variety was low, and the American consumer suffered These monopolistic structures were called “trusts”

He infused competition into the market Showed that government was more important than business Continued under the presidency of William Howard Taft
