Surface Tension This is a property of the surface of a liquid that causes it to contract and have properties resembling those of a stretched elastic membrane.

Surface Tension

Cohesion This refers to the intermolecular attraction between like-molecules, or how well the molecules stick or stay together.

Cohesion

Adhesion This is the tendency of molecules of different substances to cling together due to certain attractive forces between molecules.

Adhesion

Weathering The physical and or chemical breakdown of soil and rock by the action of water, wind, waves, etc.

Weathering

Solvent This is a liquid or gas that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gaseous solute, resulting in a homogeneous solution.

Solvent

Solute The dissolved (usually the less abundant) constituent of a solution.

Solute

Salt An ionic compound that can be formed by replacing one or more of the hydrogen ions of an acid with another positive ion. They are usually the result of a neutralization reaction between an acid and a base.

Salt The blue salt copper(II) sulfate in the form of the mineral chalcanthite

Ion An atom or group of atoms that carries an electric charge, due to having gained or lost one or more of its valence electrons.

Ion Anion Cation

Salinity This refers to the saltiness or the dissolved salt content of a body of water. This is usually expressed as the number of grams of salt left behind when 1000 grams of seawater are evaporated; or parts per thousand.

Salinity Conductivity / Salinity Meter

Practical Salinity units
A unit used to describe the concentration of dissolved salts in water, it is a measurement based on electrical conductivity and is expressed in terms of parts per thousands.

Practical Salinity units
The unit of measurement is grams of salt per 1000 grams of seawater or simply parts per thousand (written as ‰).

Precipitation Rain, sleet, hail, snow and other forms of water falling from the sky to the earth at a specific place within a specified period of time.

Precipitation

Temperature Profile A graph which shows how the temperature of the ocean changes as you go from the sea surface straight down to the seafloor.

Temperature Profile

Water Column This refers to a vertical shaft of water that extends from the surface down to the ocean floor.

Water Column

Gas Exchange This refers to the movement of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen plus other gases between the atmosphere and the ocean.

Gas Exchange
