1 Ratios, Rates, and Proportions
Unit Rates

2 Unit Rates A rate is a ratio that is expressed with two different units of measure. For example, the distance from Jacksonville to Miami is about 320 miles and takes about 5 hours; this can be expressed as 320π‘šπ‘– 5β„Žπ‘Ÿπ‘  . Unit rates are rates that have been reduced to a single unit, or 1. Unlike normal rates and ratios, unit rates can have decimals in the numerator, but the denominator should always be 1. For example: 320π‘šπ‘– 5β„Žπ‘Ÿπ‘  = Γ·5 Γ·5 = 64π‘šπ‘– 1β„Žπ‘Ÿ *Always divide by the denominator!!!

3 Sample Questions 1. Which of the following are unit rates?
75 students to 2 teachers 30lbs of turkey for $8 200 feet in 10 seconds Driving 45 mph *The answer is D: 45π‘šπ‘–π‘™π‘’π‘  1β„Žπ‘œπ‘’π‘Ÿ 2. Use the table to find the unit rate in floors per building. 𝑓 𝑏 = 15 π‘“π‘™π‘œπ‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘  1 𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 Buildings 1 2 3 Floors 15 20 45

4 Sample Question 1. An ice cream factory makes 240 qts. of ice cream in 10 hours. What is the rate per hour? 240π‘žπ‘‘π‘  10β„Žπ‘Ÿπ‘  = 24π‘žπ‘‘π‘  1β„Žπ‘Ÿ 2. Gas mileage is the number of miles you can drive on a gallon of gas. A test of a new car results in 20 gallons used to drive 490 miles. What is the car’s mileage? 490π‘šπ‘–π‘™π‘’π‘  20π‘”π‘Žπ‘™π‘™π‘œπ‘›π‘  = 24.5π‘šπ‘–π‘™π‘’π‘  1π‘”π‘Žπ‘™π‘™π‘œπ‘›
