Ratios, Rates, and Proportions
Unit Rates
2
Unit Rates A rate is a ratio that is expressed with two different units of measure. For example, the distance from Jacksonville to Miami is about 320 miles and takes about 5 hours; this can be expressed as 320ππ 5βππ . Unit rates are rates that have been reduced to a single unit, or 1. Unlike normal rates and ratios, unit rates can have decimals in the numerator, but the denominator should always be 1. For example: 320ππ 5βππ = Γ·5 Γ·5 = 64ππ 1βπ *Always divide by the denominator!!!

Sample Questions 1. Which of the following are unit rates?
75 students to 2 teachers 30lbs of turkey for $8 200 feet in 10 seconds Driving 45 mph *The answer is D: 45πππππ 1βππ’π 2. Use the table to find the unit rate in floors per building. π π = 15 ππππππ 1 ππ’ππππππ Buildings 1 2 3 Floors 15 20 45

Sample Question 1. An ice cream factory makes 240 qts. of ice cream in 10 hours. What is the rate per hour? 240ππ‘π 10βππ = 24ππ‘π 1βπ 2. Gas mileage is the number of miles you can drive on a gallon of gas. A test of a new car results in 20 gallons used to drive 490 miles. What is the carβs mileage? 490πππππ 20πππππππ = 24.5πππππ 1ππππππ
