Working with the “new” 2014 Manual
Chris Tarver, DNP(c), RN, CNS September 11, 2014
2
Disclaimer I am sharing is what information I was given by various Program Analysts and personal experience this past spring. We have not heard yet about our documents; when I do, I will for sure pass along our learnings! Especially supplemental. Cheryl (CNO) conversation with Illinois CNO/Magnet Appraiser
3
3rd Designation Documents
First time electronic submittal Mailed May 30 for June 2 arrival Blessing and Parade
4
Lessons…. Use of new manual will lead to changes while you are writing… just need to let that go! 3rd time this has happened to El Camino Hospital So… Ask lots of questions (no matter where you are in the journey…) SAVE every !!
5
Program Analyst Shuffle
Maureen Lal Tina Joy Jan Moran
6
Online DDCT Ask questions – especially about all the specialty nurses
Example: Where to put the CNLs??? Answer: Depends on how they are used… Cyndy Hagstrom very responsive! Save all s
7
Online DDCT Still maintain my own spreadsheet…
I update data in near real time
8
Not everyone is a writer…
HUGE lesson learned… Only small percentage could write in scholarly voice, complete sentences, logically Some would turn in bullets Deadlines slipped dangerously – I needed to be stricter
9
Not everyone is a writer… (cont)
Prompting… Pros: helped some to develop or find information needed Cons: Others would write one word non-descriptive answers to prompts – does humbleness get in the way??
10
Story Appointments Need to dust off report writing skills
Non-writers would talk, and I would type as fast as possible Will need editing but a great (albeit time- consuming) method to enrich a story As soon as possible, know the skills of key people
11
Graph-maker, graph-maker, make me a graph!
If you have a strong internal resource to make your graphs, especially for NSI, Patient Satisfaction and RN Satisfaction – make them your best friend! Decide on your standard template & colors as early as possible & share with PI Teams. Will unify the look of your graphs and save MPD time!!
12
Attachment Notebook One of my “bibles”
Used to keep track of my 251 attachments As well as being sure standard naming convention maintained OO vs 00
14
EO Attachments Told by Tina Joy that we were absolutely not allowed to have any EO attachment other than our prescribed data graph with 3 points of data after the intervention occurred (to show sustainability) This is NOT what others have been told We followed Tina Joy’s instructions
15
Unique (?) issues for El Camino
Definition of Nurse Leader Fairly Flat Structure Only 5 of us who fit definition Recommend figuring out who in your organization meets the definition TL5 – lead thru change TL7 – resources for care delivery TL9EO – influence change (2 of 3)
16
CNO Change Documentation period included a change in CNO
Diana Russell retired July 1, 2013 11 months before documents due Talked through with Maureen Lal How our new CNO fit in for nurse leader vs CNO
17
NDNQI “Quality Intelligence Reports”
Unfortunately not “Magnet” intelligent! Suggest visiting their booth at the conference
18
Patient Satisfaction Our area of greatest struggle to find the best measures that most closely aligned with the Magnet Requirements and we met majority of units, majority of time… In the end, one of our four measures was 50% (so not majority)
