SIMPLE SENTENCE one independent clause 1 complete subject & 1 complete predicate
John rode his bike. John and Lisa rode bikes. John and Lisa rode bikes and swam in the ocean.

Lisa rode her bike, and John swam in the ocean.
COMPOUND SENTENCE 2 independent clause joined by a comma and coordinating conjunction or semicolon Lisa rode her bike, and John swam in the ocean.

COMPLEX SENTENCE 1 independent clause + 1 dependent (subordinate) clause
When I read Longfellow’s poem, I wondered if Paul Revere had really said those famous words. Lisa chose to run for mayor since her archrival left the race.

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
2 Independent clauses and 1 dependent clause (beginning with a subordinate conjunction) The sentence will also contain a coordinating conjunction FANBOYS
