Today we will look at an approach to PLANNING an essay.
You will use your study notes to do this.

2. Explain how the writer develops a setting for a particular purpose.
Step 1: Unpacking the essay topic

3. Step 2: Gather Your Evidence
Look for quotations that discuss setting.
Go through each of the commentaries on the chapters.
Read through the quotations and explanation of quotations
Select quotations that tell you about the setting

4. Step 3: Sorting Your Evidence
Group your quotations into categories and rank their importance.
Categories could include: quotations about the class system in Panem, quotations about the hunger in districts, quotations about the controlling government.
Each category will be an aspect (= one paragraph) of setting that you will explore in an essay

5. Step 4: Pick an Angle
Look at how much evidence you have under each category.
Select the category with the most evidence.
Revisit the topic and write statement that addresses all aspects. This is to remind you that you need to cover the topic in full.

6. Step 5: Write your essay
Use the statement you wrote in Step 4 in your introduction.
Group your points into separate paragraphs
Embed and explain how your quotations support your main points.

7. A short version For Exams:
Learn 5-10 quotations that you know can be applied to a number of topics.
In the first five minutes of the exam, jot down these quotations.
Read over the essay topics and choose the one you think is best
Circle the quotations that apply and jot down the points you will make
Check that you are able to answer the whole essay topic.
