Language Arts
Goals:
Students will meet goals outlined in the NC Standard Course of Study.
Students will be taught reading, writing, grammar, and spelling within the reader’s workshop framework.

4. “General” Information
Reader’s Workshop Format:
Read Aloud/Mini-Lesson-This is a time when I model reading and writing strategies.
Independent Practice- Students use self selected texts along with their notes to practice the skill or strategy developed in the mini-lessons.
Small groups: Students receive targeted instruction based on their needs.

Self selected texts: Students should select a text for independent reading and homework.
-a Level 5.0 or higher (ALPS 6.0)
-Or Scholastic Guided Reading Level T or higher (ALPS W). Scholastic Book Wizard
-Lexile 830L or higher (ALPS 900L)

Language Arts
Expectations:
Have an Independent Reading Book at all times.
Read for 20 minutes each day and complete Thinkmark for homework. Keep a record of finished books on the reading log.
Study spelling words. Quiz on Fridays for first quarter.

The Students will:
Explore the building blocks of matter and the different properties of matter.
Build an understanding of the lithosphere.
Investigate the characteristics of matter and energy flow through an ecosystem.

The Students will:
Investigate the characteristics of energy transfer.
Build an understanding of the solar system.

9. Science
Students are to keep a science section in their binder. Students receive one unit at a time of notes to be kept up with in class. All loose papers need to stay in their science section. DO NOT THROW OUT SCIENCE PAPERS!! We do have a state test at the end of the year…they will want these to review.

Social Studies: We will be looking at five eras, beginning with the prehistoric era and ending in the year The Social Studies curriculum is based on concepts within time periods and a variety of civilizations.

Main topics covered this year include: The Stone Age and the development of the first civilizations including Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, The Indus River Valley civilizations, Ancient China, Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire finally wrapping up with early Native American civilizations and the
end of the medieval period in
Europe and interactions
between the continents.

12. “General” Information
Social Studies
A class topic list went home with all students.The class will be interdisciplinary and will include geography, history, world cultures, and some basic economics.
We will also be looking at how we fit into the world by blending current/international information into our units.
Each unit after Prehistory will be based on the 7 characteristics of a civilization. Questions we might look at include what made it different? How it affects us today? What led to its rise or fall? How the society survived or recovered following times of trouble.
So to put it briefly we are aiming higher than just the facts!

Social Studies
With millions of years of history on many continents we have a daunting task. Without a textbook supplemental materials, handouts, and materials found on my website should be reviewed before quizzes.
Keeping an organized binder/notes is important. SS section of binder can be cleaned out after each unit quiz/test. Please keep the handouts at home and don’t throw them away as they may be needed for later review.
Reviewing minutes per night is better than cramming an hour before the test.
