Lesson 2

2. VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY
John 16:  "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14  "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15  "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

3. TRIUNE NATURE OF GOD
One of the major deterrents to Jewish people receiving Christ is the claim of divinity
The concept of a triune God is foreign to Jewish thought; even today, the Jews are not expecting a Messiah who is God
Genesis 1:1-2  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
God: elohim: noun, masculine, plural: BUT the plural can be used in Hebrew for emphasis
We do, however, see the presence of the Spirit at creation

4. THE SHEMA
Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!” or
“Hear, O Israel, The LORD our God is one LORD”
Shema Ysrael Yahweh Elohim achad Yahweh
Achad usually expresses a singular unity coming from two or more things; yachid usually expresses one
Genesis 2:24  For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
The Jewish people did not speak or write the tetragrammaton YHWH (He who is or He who caused things to be)
Exodus 3:14  God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'“

5. EVIDENCE?
Isaiah 6:1-3  In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory."
Revelation 4:8 And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say, "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME.“

6. WORK OF THE TRINITY
Matthew 3:16-17  After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,  and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…”
Ephesians 4:11  And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers (RISEN CHRIST)
1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. (SPIRIT)

7. CONSIDER THE SOURCE
Romans 12:6  Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; (GOD Theos)
Within the church, there is not only a discussion of who sends the Holy Spirit, but also who sends the gifts to believers
Ephesians 2:17-18  AND HE CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO YOU WHO WERE FAR AWAY, AND PEACE TO THOSE WHO WERE NEAR; for through Him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father.
John 14:6  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

8. GOD QUALITIES OMNISCIENCE, OMNIPRESENT, ETERNAL, OMNIPOTENT
The Spirit is defined as breath or wind
1 Corinthians 16:18  For they have refreshed my spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge such men.
Spirit: pneuma: wind or spirit
Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.
Breath: ruach: breath, wind, spirit
Greek: psuche = soul; animal sense of being/identity
pneuma = spirit (or soul) rational, immortal
Hebrew: nephesh = psuche
ruach = pneuma

9. IN CREATION
The Arian position on the trinity argued that Jesus was “begotten by God” to create the world but He is God, just not an equal
The Holy Spirit is only an expression of the power of God and not a separate entity
John 1:1-5  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Today the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons maintain partial Arian doctrine

10. CONFIRMATIONS
Isaiah 6:8-10  Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I. Send me!” He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not perceive; keep on looking, but do not understand.’ Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.
Acts 28:25-27… "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, saying,'GO TO THIS PEOPLE AND SAY, "YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL AND WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES; OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.”

11. FURTHER CONFIRMATION
Jeremiah 31:31-33  "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Hebrews 10:15-17  And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, "THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEART, AND ON THEIR MIND I WILL WRITE THEM," He then says, AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE."

12. FINAL THOUGHTS
2 Timothy 3:16-17  All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Inspired: theopneustos: God-breathed
2 Peter 1:20-21  But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD; THE THIRD MEMBER OF THE GODHEAD SENT TO SEAL AND INDWELL THOSE WHO BELONG TO JESUS
