Historical Timeline TRP’s
Your 3 TRP’s should answer this basic questions: How does your historical research connect to the book? How does your historical research help you better understand the book?

Example Research Question: How was a typical white woman supposed to act in the 1940’s? Historical Research: middle-class women in the 1940’s were expected to be well-dressed at all times. They typically wore petticoats, knee-length dresses, and corsets (Williams, 1999). Book Quotation: “I was wearing my pink Sunday dress, shoes, and a petticoat, and reflected that if I spilled anything Calpurnia would have to wash my dress again for tomorrow” (Lee, 261).

TRP Scout’s clothing shows that she is changing into a typical Southern woman. Women in the 1940’s were expected to dress presentably; petticoats and dresses were the standard for a white middle-class female (Williams, 1999). When Scout attends Aunt Alexandra’s tea party, she says, “I was wearing my pink Sunday dress, shoes, and a petticoat, and reflected that if I spilled anything Calpurnia would have to wash my dress again for tomorrow” (Lee, 261). This description illustrates that Scout is dressing more like a typical woman. Lee shows us that Scout is maturing through her change in clothing.

Checklist Do I have TEN historical facts?
