1 The Old Testament, Israel, and the Law of Moses
The Rule of Law The Old Testament, Israel, and the Law of Moses

2 The History of Salvation
Creation Infection Diagnosis Cure Judgment Restoration Recovery

3 The need for a law After the fall of man, it was made very clear that humans are sinful - the flood - the tower of Babel - the perversion of the Canaanites The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. Genesis 6:5 But instead of punishing sin directly, God has chosen to work through people in this world

4 Abraham Abram was a Chaldean who was called out of his home country by God and chosen for his faithfulness. He became the father of the Chosen People

5 The Promise To Abraham Abraham received several promises from God because he was tested and found to be faithful: - those who bless you will be blessed, those who curse you will be cursed - you will be the father of many nations - in you all nations will be blessed Abraham was saved by faith in the Messiah who was to come in the future

6 The Law of Moses When Abraham’s children had multiplied into a powerful people, they were ready to inhabit their land. They were given laws to govern personal behavior and society - 613 total laws: 365 negative (don’t do ____) and 248 positive (do ____) - example: do not murder (basic actions) - example: do not envy (basic emotions) - example: bulls (social rules Leviticus 21:35-36) - temple rituals and requirements for ceremonial holiness

7 The purpose of the Law (Gal 3:19, 24-25)
The law of moses The purpose of the Law (Gal 3:19, 24-25) The law had several reasons that it was given: - to prove that humans can’t live by the rules even if everything is given to them - to show the need for a transformation of the spirit - to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah - to keep society from falling apart (like in Judges) - health and social fairness - to keep Israel separate from surrounding nations

8 The Law was NOT given to save people
The law of moses The Law was NOT given to save people Rom 3:20, Gal 2:16, 3:10-11 An X-ray doesn't cure a broken bone. A speed limit sign doesn't slow down your car. They are only a diagnosis of the problem and a guideline to correct it.

9 The Jews served several important functions in God’s plan of salvation
The role of israel The Jews served several important functions in God’s plan of salvation - God’s weapon for punishing evil (1 Sam 15:2-3) - the Messiah and salvation would come from this people (Gen 22:18, Gal 3:8) - to be the chosen people of God (Ex 29:45)

10 Israel rejects the messiah
We know how this story goes: Jesus came as the fulfillment of everything the Jews had waited for. But they were so hardened that they rejected Him Romans 10:1-4 tells why they rejected their promised King - pride - envy - self-righteousness

11 The rejection of israel
Even though Jews are the “chosen people”, the fact that they rejected their Messiah caused them to fall away from God and be scattered across the world (Romans 11). What is the endgame for Israel (according to Romans?)

12 The Transfer of The Promise
It turns out God knew that the Messiah would be rejected and had already planned to transfer the promises of Abraham onto believers (Gal 3:6-11) “The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.” (Gal 3:7 NLT)

13 If good and evil exist, God exists
Israel today If good and evil exist, God exists The Jews are currently still living under the blessings given to their godly ancestors, but most of them are fallen (Synagogue of Satan, “Sodom and Egypt”). Only a remnant will be saved, those who accept Jesus and salvation through faith: Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. (Romans 9:27)

14 Restoration of the remnant
Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree. (Romans 11:22-23)

15 The Law of Moses Today The Law of Moses was given as a tutor to lead people to Jesus (Galatians 3:24) It only serves as a guideline for the people of God (the Church) - we don’t need to follow the Mosaic Law - following Jewish traditions doesn’t give any benefit. In fact, it might Take you further from God (Galatians 5:4) - in the New Covenant, anyone can have access to God
