2. AP Essays
There is one poetry essay, one prose, and one open-ended question.
I like to think of literature as a painting and authors as artists.
What is the painting making you think or feel (the emotional message)?
How did the artist get you to feel that way (colors, brush strokes, type of paint…in literature, we call these “literary terms”)
For each, you’ll have a topic. I like to think of this as the “hint” for the first question.
Your thesis is guided by the topic, but must be more specific.

Thesis: “A loss of innocence occurs when one has a traumatic experience at a young age
Evidence: Characterization-How Myop changes as the story progresses
Evidence: Imagery of Death and Decay, Darkness
Evidence: Symbolism – Murder, a killing

8. “Silence - A Fable” Topic: “Man’s place in society and nature”
Thesis: Silence is not meant for society. A man is frightened of silence because of the realization that there is nothing there.
Evidence: Irony- stays calm through lightning and thunder, but is scared after the silence.
Evidence: Tone/mood- beginning of the story a happier mood and towards the end becomes darker
Evidence: Imagery- the water, lilies, heaven, and horizon. Towards end- thunder, lighting, demon

9. “The Lottery” Topic: “Traditions and norms”
Thesis: As a whole, we conform to societal norms and traditions despite our own feelings, morals or ethics.
