Herbert Hoover (R) was elected president in 1928
He believed in the Trickle Down Theory (Help the rich and the relief will trickle down)

4. Poor resented his plan b/c it helped the rich who already had $$$
Hoover felt “Rugged Individualism” would be lost
He felt giving direct aid to the people would make them soft

Unemployment % out of work
Bonus Army- WWI Vets wanted their bonus pay early
Hoover refused and sent in troops to disperse them

9. Hoovervilles- homeless slept in tents and shacks
Minorities- mainly blacks lost jobs to whites regardless of skill
Dust Bowl- drought in Great Plains and farmland turned to dust, farmers were crushed

19. FDR & the New Deal Franklin D. Roosevelt (D) crushed Hoover in 1932
FDR felt the govt. should do whatever it could to help the people (poor loved him)
